The Reina-Valera Bible is a Spanish translation of the sacred books of the Old and New Testament. It was published on September 28th in 1569 and is also known as the "Biblia del Oso" (Bear Bible). The translation was made by Casiodoro de Reina. Cipriano de Valera later made the first revision of the translation in 1602. The Reina-Valera Bible gained widespread use during the Protestant Reformation of the XVI-century. Nowadays,it is one of the most widely used Spanish Bibles by many Christian churches derived from the Reformation (including evangelical churches), as well as other Christian faith groups such as the Seventh-day Adventist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Gideons International, and other non-denominational Christians.
Casiodoro de Reina, a Spanish Hieronymite monk from the Monastery of San Isidro del Campo, worked for twelve years on the translation of the Bible. The "Biblia del Oso" was published in Basel, Switzerland. It is called the "Bear Bible" due to the illustration on its cover of a bear reaching for a honeycomb hanging from a tree. This illustration was used to avoid the use of religious icons as they were prohibited at that time.
Reina based his translation of the Old Testament on the Hebrew Masoretic Text (Bomberg edition, 1525). As he believed that the Latin Vulgate had fulfilled its purpose and contained errors and changes, he preferred to use the Latin translation by Sanctes Pagnino (Veteris et Novi Testamenti nova translatio, 1528) as a secondary source. He would correct the Masoretic version whenever it deviated from Old Testament citations in the New Testament. Reina also had access to Abraham Usque and Yom-Tob Athias' translation of the Bible into Judeo-Spanish used by Sephardic Jews known as the "Bible of Ferrara" (1553), which he held in high esteem.
For the translation of the New Testament, Reina relied on the Textus Receptus (Erasmus 1516, Stephanus 1550), the Complutensian Polyglot, and the best Greek manuscripts known at that time. He seems to have consulted Juan Pérez de Pineda's translation of the New Testament from 1556, Francisco de Enzinas' translation from 1543, and translations by Juan de Valdés.
